Whether you’re a hobbyist, a teacher, or a professional potter, getting the right fit for your pottery batts is essential for smooth and successful throwing sessions. At Hartley & Noble, we know that no two wheels are exactly alike, even if they come from the same manufacturer. That’s why it’s so important to measure your own wheelhead before ordering any batts or batt systems.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to accurately measure your pottery wheel—whether it has batt pin bolts or not—so you can find or custom order the perfect fit for your studio.
Why Measuring Matters
Many potters make the mistake of relying solely on manufacturer specifications. But small differences—sometimes just a millimetre or two—can impact how well your batts fit and perform. Our Over-the-Wheel Batt Systems, for example, are designed with slight tolerances to ensure ease of use, and correct measurement ensures everything fits exactly as intended.
So before you order, take a few minutes to measure your wheelhead properly. You’ll get a product that fits like a glove—and makes your pottery-making smoother, faster, and more enjoyable.
Step-by-Step: Measuring Your Pottery Wheelhead
1. If Your Wheel Does NOT Have Batt Pin Bolts
If your wheelhead is smooth and has no batt pin bolts, you’ll want to follow these simple steps:
- Measure the diameter of your wheelhead across its widest point using a metal ruler or a measuring tape.
- Do not use a standard 30cm ruler unless your wheel is that small—accuracy is key.
- Once measured, choose the closest size available from our standard options.
If your size isn’t listed, simply choose the closest match and enter your exact measurements into the “Bespoke Design” box on the product page.
💡 Tip: Our Over-the-Wheel Tile Batt Systems are designed to be slightly larger than your wheelhead. A little movement is normal when dry, but once spinning with a damp batt rug underneath, everything sits snugly.

2. If Your Wheel DOES Have Batt Pin Bolts
Wheels with batt pin bolts require more detailed measurements to ensure the batts fit over the pins correctly. Follow these steps:
What You’ll Need:
- Metal ruler or measuring tape
- Optional: Batt Pin Measuring Gauge or Vernier Calipers (Buy one here)

Measure These Points:
A → Left edge of the wheelhead
B → Centre of the first batt pin
C → Centre of the second batt pin
D → Right edge of the wheelhead
Record these measurements:
- A to B
- B to C
- C to D
The sum of all three should equal the total diameter of your wheelhead.

Also Measure:
- The diameter of your batt pin bolts (usually 9mm or 10mm). Measure straight across the middle using your ruler or measuring gauge.

Enter these measurements into the “Bespoke Design” box or write them in the comments at checkout.
