What is the Over-the-Wheel Russian Doll Batt System?
The Over-The-Wheel Russian Doll Batt System is a modular batt system designed for pottery wheels with no batt pins.
It fits over the wheelhead, giving you a stable surface for throwing, lifting and drying your pots, with size options available for wheelheads from 250mm upwards.
The Russian doll element of the system allows you to use tile inserts of 3 different sizes, these are 100mm, 150mm & 200mm square. When using the 100mm & 150mm inserts, you simply use the included adaptors for seamless throwing between sizes!
The Over-The-Wheel Russian Doll Batt System includes:
- 1 x Over-the-Wheel Master Batt
- 1 x Stay-Put Batt Rug
- 1 x 200mm – 150mm adaptor
- 1 x 200mm – 100mm adaptor
- 5 x 100mm Tile inserts
- 5 x 150mm Tile inserts
- 5 x 200mm Tile inserts
The system is made of our premium, warp-proof wood and comes with everything you need to start throwing straight out of the box.
If you require a bespoke sized master batt, simply pick the “Bespoke Size Requested” option on the “Wheelhead Diameter” box to the right. You can then add your bespoke dimensions to the “Measurement” box that pops up!

How to use the Over-the-Wheel Russian Doll Batt System
Using the Russian Doll Batt System couldn’t be easier, set it up in just three simple steps! Your batt system comes with all of the kit needed to start throwing immediately, and if you need our help, we are only a phone call or email away!
1. Wet the batt rug, squeeze it out and place on the wheel with the tabs hanging over the edge.
2. Place the master batt over the batt rug and wheel head.
3. Place the chosen tile insert into the batt system, dampen the tile insert and start throwing.

How to Take your Pottery Off the Wheel
Taking your pottery off the wheel will never be easier than with our Over-the-Wheel Russian Doll Batt System! Use the batt system to throw your work, then just pop out the tile and move it to the side ready for drying. As you can see from the photo below, the tiles allow you to store many items together so its ideal for people with limited space or lots of pieces to make.
Another thing our customers love the most about our Batt Systems is the fact that their work just ‘pops’ off the tile insert. You throw the piece, leave it on the tile insert to get just under leather hard and then using the techniques shown below it will just ‘pop’ off. Now as with everything to do with pottery, this takes a little practice, but once you’ve mastered it you’ll never have to trim or wire the base of your pieces again!
