Product Details

Our set of 3XL Round Pottery Drape Forms have been created to help you make large plates and platters.  They come fitted with our Drape Form Handle for easy removal of the form from the clay body.

Available in two different edge finishes. Select either the 45 degree chamfer, or the square edge with rounded base.

Use for hand building, without the need for a pottery wheel.  Or choose our Giffin Grip style and we will adapt them to fit the standard blue sliders of the Giffin Grip, so that you can hand build plates at your pottery wheel!

This set includes:

3 x Drape Forms in the following sizes
    15 Inches (381mm)
    13.5 Inches (343mm)
    12 Inches (304mm)

1 x Drape Form Removal Handle Kit - Fitted for you. We will fit each form with a threaded insert, so that you can attach the removal  handle, making it easy for you to remove the drape from from the clay body.

How to use these forms for hand building:
Wedge a ball of clay.
Roll into an even, 1/4 inch thick slab.
Compress both sides of the clay slab with a pottery rib.
Place the form onto the clay and cut around it leaving an inch margin of excess clay.
Drape the clay over the form.
Use your fingers to smooth it onto the form, and then get a pin tool to trim away the excess clay.
Put the form onto a riser to lift it off the workbench (click here to check out our rising stars - we recommend the large size for lifting these XL forms).
Using the rib apply smooth, even, swiping motions to shape the clay around the form.
Neaten up with a damp sponge.

Our thanks to Jen & Tonic Pottery, and Liz Wills for allowing us to share photos of plates they have hand built using our Drape Forms.

Drying & Removal:
Leave the clay to dry on the form for a few hours under a plastic sheet.
Do not leave clay on the form to completely dry - it should only be left until it begins to hold its shape.
The length of time needed for drying will depend on the climate and dampness of your environment.  We recommend checking it every couple of hours.
Once the clay starts to hold its shape, remove the drape form using the removal handle, and allow your plate to continue drying slowly under plastic.
This final drying process may take a few days - it's important to dry slowly to avoid warping or cracking later on.

How to use these forms with the standard blue sliders of the Giffin Grip:
Wedge a ball of clay.
Roll into an even, 1/4 thick slab.
Compress the clay on both sides, using a pottery rib.
Watch the video below to see the full process - our thanks to Old Forge Ceramics for allowing use this video.

How to look after these drape forms:
These forms are manufactured from our economy MDF material so please do not submerge in water as this can cause swelling and warping.
To clean just wipe with a damp sponge to remove any clay.
Do not use metal scourers or screwdrivers on these forms as this can cause damage to your form.
